Our Story

In 2008, a few of our members had an idea to start a cooperative house that was based in Unitarian Universalist values and tradition. Through a number of one-to-one conversations, they pulled together a planning team, and in 2009, we had our Kickoff Party, where we raised over $14,000 and had over 180 guest in attendance.

In 2010, the planning team formed a non-profit (Unitarian Universalist Community Cooperatives, or UUCC) that would ultimately purchase the Lucy Stone Cooperative. We raised lots of money, met with lots of people, did a real estate search that lasted many months, and ultimately put an offer on a house that was accepted in late 2010.

In December of 2010, through community-supported financing, Unitarian Universalist Community cooperatives purchased a beautiful three-story, eleven-bedroom Victorian house in Dudley Square in Roxbury, MA, which became the Lucy Stone Cooperative. We moved in to the house after six weeks of renovations in February of 2011.

Since we’ve moved in, we’ve gotten house systems up and running, done a number of major renovations, built community within and beyond our walls, learned more about who we are as a community, gotten to know our neighbors, gardened, played games, laughed, celebrated, mourned, cooked for one another, had meetings and held parties, and learned a lot about ourselves and one another.

In June of 2012, we held a day-long strategic planning session with our members and board and friends of the house, and came up with a five year plan. The Lucy Stone Cooperative had been thriving, and we were excited to think together about how to expand our model.

You can check out our annual reports and our slide show for more details about what we’ve been up to since we moved in!
